Vienna, Ober St. Veit, Episcopal Palace

Shortly after Empress Maria Theresa purchased the palace of Ober-St. Veit from the Archbishop of Vienna, she commissioned Johann Wenzel Bergl with the decorative painting of six rooms in the years 1762/63. The exotic landscapes were done on canvas; in the vaulting zone they were applied directly on the plaster. The fantasy fauna and flora were inspired by “Nouvelles Indes”, a famous series of tapestries. The Episcopal Summer Palace is privately owned and is not accessible to the public.
